CHAPTER FIVE

GORILLA ATTACK

Caleb Moon’s idea of making a return trek to home now he had no means of getting to Akada, had definitely been hastily conceived. He realised it now as he pushed his way through the jungle in the dawn light. All night he had been on the move, spared attack by savage beasts or reptiles; but the fact remained that he was lost—completely. Nor had he anything with which to protect himself. The warriors had taken his gun and rhino-whip. The only thing he had was a tough tree branch, an extremely poor weapon against the sudden fury that might spring upon him from the fastness at any moment.

Breathing hard, his tattered khaki drill nearly in rags and sodden with perspiration, he sat down on a tree stump and considered. Then he squinted skywards towards the tangle of foliage through which he could catch a glimpse of the rising sun. That way lay the east. It had seemed simple enough to move in that direction, but such is the jungle it can make a man turn in circles without knowing it.

“You try to escape me, white man?”

With a violent start, which nonetheless had a touch of relief in it, Moon turned sharply. Tocoto, with his scarred arm, was standing not very far away. Presumably he had dropped in complete silence from the trees.

“Escape? No,” Moon answered, getting up. “I’m glad to see you. I have no gun and I was wondering what to do.”

“You did not follow Tocoto last night when the captives escaped.”

“I know. You were too quick for me.”

Tocoto reflected, his handsome face grim. He came forward to where the fat trader was standing.

“I do not believe you,” he said. “You try to reach Akada by yourself and leave Tocoto behind.”

“Nothing of the sort. I tried to follow, and lost myself.”

“Then we will go to Akada together, as planned. I followed you through the night. You will not escape me.”

Moon spread his hands, his black eyes searching the giant’s face.

“We cannot reach Akada,” he said. “The map was stolen from me by the man who released the white woman—and I suppose it was your double. Without the map, and the white woman to interpret its signs, I cannot do anything. We shall never get to Akada.”

Tocoto pondered; then, “Why is this white woman so needed by you? What does she know about the map that you cannot read?”

“There are hidden signs on it which only she understands.”

Again Tocoto reflected. Moon eyed him and then added:

“At this moment your double and girl will be on their way to Akada. Not the smaller white man, though, since you say he was speared. As for us, we can do nothing.”

“This time I will make no mistake,” Tocoto muttered, clenching his fists. “The man who looks like me must be destroyed and the map got back. The woman must be seized to read the signs. Come—we will look for them.”
